Goals & Methodology

AP Studio art Drawing is a rigorous course that tackles advanced drawing concepts.  The goal of the course is to produce a body of art work, a portfolio, that is worthy of college level credit.   The class will address the grammar (skill building) and logic (composition and further development) of drawing, as well as introduce the rhetoric (storytelling and personal voice) of drawing.  Additionally, students will engage in study of art history and criticism, art career investigation, and developing a Christian world view of the arts.

  •  Major Projects - Directed in class assignments, approx. 6 hours each
  •  “In response” - worksheets or 3-5 bullets, typed responses to: articles, art history, artist research, career investigation, and “developing a Christian World View of the Arts”.
  • Drawing Homework - minimum 3 hours spent weekly on assigned sketchbook concepts or specific large drawings.  Some homework drawing will need to be drawn from for portfolio completion, especially for the concentration.
  • Bonus Round- Optional additional class time, media experimentation, surprise drawing field trips and “wrap-up and thanksgiving”.  Required visiting artist lectures.

Assessment

Major projects culminate in weekly formal class critiques with teachers and peers.  Student work is assessed in light of stated objectives for each project.  Students will self assess with rubrics (grading scales) before receiving a final grade.  Comments and numerical grades will then be provided.
